What Are High THC Strains?
High THC seed strains are exactly what they sound like — cannabis strains that contain higher THC content than others. Many factors go into breeding a potent strain, but two of the most important factors are:
- Quality of a plant’s genetics. Essentially, how potent their parent strains are. The stronger a parent strain is, the more likely its offspring will be more potent.
- How the plant was grown. Quality soil, proper lighting, the right amount of humidity — small factors like these add up to make a big difference in plant health!
Since cannabis has started to become legalized in the U.S. — and especially since the passing of the 2018 Farm Bill — it’s been much easier for breeders to experiment with strains!
High THC Seeds: What Is a High Percentage?
What’s even considered a high percentage of THC? This will depend based on who you ask and where you look. An average THC level for most products you’ll find on shelves is usually from less than 0.3% to up to 4%. On the other hand, a high THC strain can have up to 25 to 30% THC!
Most experts categorize THC content into the following levels:
- Lower-level: Up to 10% THC content
- Average to high-level THC: 18-20% THC content
- Highest THC level: 25-30% THC content
Higher THC levels are usually characteristic of a Cannabis strain like OG kush, while hemp strains tend to have much lower levels. You’ll find that hemp strains typically have higher levels of CBD or cannabidiol, another well-known natural cannabinoid.
While some strains are advertised to have over 30% THC levels, we suggest taking caution in purchasing seeds or strains that advertise percentages this high. There are biological limits to how much THC a single cannabis plant can contain, and this is usually a clear indicator of false advertising.
History of High THC seeds
The first documented case of THC cannabis goes as far back as 2800 BCE. Emperor Shen Nung used it, and it was also used for religious and spiritual purposes.
Smokable cannabis didn’t start gaining popularity in the U.S. until the early 1900s. It was around the same time that prohibition laws were being passed in the US. Cannabis was then used as a scapegoat for other social ills and was banned outright in many states.
Despite prohibition, people continued to grow and use high thc seeds and hemp strains illegally. It was during this time that some of the most popular high thc seed strains today were first bred!

What Type of High THC Seeds Are There?
You have a lot of options when choosing your high THC seeds! When deciding on the perfect seeds for you, we think one of the best places to start is figuring out which strain type you want to grow. Each has its own benefits and effects and may be better for some consumers over others. Let’s break down the three strain types together
- Indica THC Strains. These are perfect for people looking to relax after a long day or evening. Indica THC strains can have up to 30% THC content and usually produce a sense of couch-lock, making them great for unwinding.
- Sativa THC Strains. Sativas are perfect for when you need an energy boost or want to be more productive. Sativa THC strains can also have up to 30% THC content but are more likely to produce a head high, making them perfect for social situations or when you need to be on your feet.
- Hybrid THC Strains. As the name suggests, hybrid strains are a mix of both Indica and Sativa THC strains. These seeds can lean more one way or the other depending on the parent strains. A hybrid can either be:
- 50/50
- Indica-dominant hybrid (mostly Indica strain)
- Sativa-dominant strain (mostly Sativa strain)
Regular (Unsexed) THC Seeds
Now that we’ve gone over the different types of high THC seeds, let’s talk about regular (unsexed) THC seeds. These are your typical cannabis seeds that have not been bred to be male or female. Instead, they’re a 50/50 mix of both genders!
This can be great for those who want to grow their own cannabis but don’t necessarily want to put the time and effort into breeding their own plants. However, it also means that you’ll have to deal with some male plants in your grow room or garden.
Feminized THC Seeds
Feminized seeds are bred to only grow female plants. Breeders do this by taking a female plant and stress-inducing it until it produces pollen. That pollen is then used to fertilize another female plant, creating feminized seeds.
This type of seed is perfect for those who want to avoid having any male plants in their grow room or garden. Feminized seeds are also great for those who want to conserve space as you can usually get more female plants per square meter/foot than with regular seeds.
Autoflower THC Seeds
Last but not least, we have autoflower THC seeds! Cannabis seeds that have been bred to flower automatically, regardless of the light cycle. This means that you can grow cannabis plants in as little as 10 weeks from start to finish!
Autoflower seeds are perfect for those who want to grow their own cannabis but don’t have a lot of time or space. They’re also great for beginner growers who want to get a feel for growing before moving on to more complicated setups.
The Benefits of high THC Strains
Now that we’ve gone over the different types of high THC seeds, let’s talk about the benefits of THC! THC is the main psychoactive compound in cannabis and is responsible for many of the plant’s effects.
Commonly used to help ease discomfort, soothe upset stomachs, and more. THC is also known to increase creativity and productivity, depending on the strain type!
In addition to its many applications, THC is also known for its recreational effects. THC can produce a sense of relaxation and euphoria, as well as increased appetite and decreased inhibitions. The highest THC strains are even known to increase sensory perception and can cause changes in time and space perception.
So, whether you’re looking to alleviate aches or just want to relax and have some fun, THC is a great option! Just remember to start slow with a low dose and work your way up to find the perfect amount for you.
How To Grow High THC Strains
The best way to grow your own high THC seeds is by first researching the optimum environment for each strain you’re trying to grow. Providing the best environment for your high THC buds you want to grow will produce the best results.
Indoor grows typically produce the strongest Cannabis strains because you have 100% control over the environment that you’re growing in. Unfortunately, grow closets or indoor grow spaces aren’t easy for everyone to make space for.
Here are some general tips for growing and maintaining premium THC strains, whether your grow is indoors or outdoors!
Germination
The first step of growing your own high THC seeds is germinating the seeds. You can do this in a few different ways, but the most common method is the paper towel method.
How To Germinate
To germinate your seeds using the paper towel method, you’ll need:
- Paper towels
- A plate
- Your chosen cannabis seeds
- A Ziploc bag (optional)
Once you have your materials:
- Soak 2-4 sheets of paper towel in water until they’re saturated but not dripping wet.
- Place the soaked paper towels on the plate and spread your cannabis seeds evenly over the towels.
- If you’re using a Ziploc bag, place the plate with the seeds and paper towels inside the bag.
Place the plate or tray with the cannabis seeds in a warm, dark place. A good place to put them is on top of a refrigerator or inside a cupboard.
Check on your seeds daily, adding more water to the paper towels or heat mat as needed to keep them moist. In 1-7 days, you should see little white tails poking out of your seeds as they sprout. Then, you can plant!
Optimum Temperature
The optimum temperature for growing cannabis is between 65-85 degrees Fahrenheit. However, each cannabis strain has a different ideal temperature range. For example, some Indica strains prefer cooler temperatures while Sativa strains prefer warmer temperatures. We highly recommend researching the optimum temperature range for your specific strain before starting your grow.
When growing cannabis, it’s important to pay attention to daytime and nighttime temperatures. The ideal nighttime temperature for growing cannabis is 10-15 degrees cooler than daytime temps.
Additionally, make sure that your grow room has good ventilation so that the air doesn’t get too stagnant and humid. Stagnant air can lead to mold and mildew growth, ruining your entire growth.
Lighting
Cannabis plants need a lot of light! The ideal lighting setup for a cannabis grow room is either fluorescent lighting or LED lighting. Fluorescent lighting is cheaper and easier to find, but it doesn’t produce as much light as LED lights. LEDs are more expensive, but they use less electricity and produce more light.
The amount of light that your plants need depends on the stage of growth that they’re in. Your plants will need 18-24 hours of light per day during the vegetative stage. They will only need 12-14 hours of light per day at the flowering stage.
It’s important to make sure that your grow room has a dark period so that your plants can rest. This dark period is usually 12 hours long and should be during the nighttime. You can use a timer to ensure that your grow room has the correct light cycle.
Humidity Levels
The ideal humidity level for growing cannabis is between 40-60%. However, each cannabis strain has a different ideal humidity range, similar to temperature. For example, some Indica strains prefer higher humidity levels, while Sativa strains prefer lower humidity levels. We recommend researching the optimum humidity level for your specific strain before starting your grow on some mysterious, high THC strain you may not enjoy.
If the humidity in your grow room is too low, your plants will suffer from stress and may become more susceptible to pests and diseases. On the other hand, if the humidity in your grow room is too high, your plants will be more likely to develop mold and mildew.
One way to maintain a consistent humidity level in your grow room is to use a humidifier. You can also try placing a bowl of water in your grow room to help increase the humidity. Just make sure to check the water level regularly and add more as needed.
Nutrients
Cannabis plants need a variety of nutrients to grow and thrive. The three main nutrients that your cannabis will need are nitrogen (N), phosphorus (P), and potassium (K). These nutrients are often referred to as “NPK.”
You can find these nutrients in both organic and synthetic forms. Organic nutrients come from natural sources like manure and compost, while synthetic nutrients are made in a laboratory. Most growers prefer to use organic nutrients because they are less likely to burn your plants. However, synthetic nutrients are often cheaper and easier to find. Ultimately, the decision of whether to use organic or synthetic nutrients is up to you.
The best way to give your plants nutrients is through fertilization. This is when you mix the nutrients into the soil or water your plants are growing in. There are various fertilizers available on the market, so be sure to do your research before choosing one.
High THC Seeds: Indoor Growing Tips
Now that you know the basics of cannabis cultivation, it’s time to start growing your own high THC strains! Here are some tips to help you get started on an indoor grow:
- Choose the right strain for indoor growing.
- Select a big enough pot for your plant
- Make sure your grow room has good ventilation.
- Provide your plants with plenty of light.
- Be sure to monitor the temperature and humidity levels in your grow room.
- Fertilize your plants regularly to ensure they get the nutrients they need.
THC Flower Outdoor Growing Tips
Outdoor growing is a great option for those who want to grow their own cannabis but don’t have the space for an indoor grow room. Here are a few tips to help you get started on an outdoor grow:
- Choose a strain better suited for outdoor growing.
- Find a sunny spot for your plants.
- Provide your plants with enough water.
- Make sure your plants have protection from strong winds or weather.
- Fertilize your plants’ soil to ensure they have enough nutrients.
- If you can’t obtain great soil, try using a growing container!
Additional Growing Tips
Whether you’re growing indoors or outdoors, these extra tips will help you keep your plants in tip-top shape!
- Prevent Stress & Injuries. Don’t top (or trim) your THC-rich cannabis strains too early — wait until they’ve had a chance to develop some good size and structure before topping them. This will help prevent any unnecessary stress or injury to your plants.
- Avoid Overfeeding Nutrients. As with any other type of plant, overfeeding nutrients can cause problems. Be sure to follow the directions on your nutrient labels, and never give your plants more than they need. A little bit of extra TLC goes a long way with high THC strains!
