How To Start Growing Cannabis From Seeds?

Before you start growing cannabis plants on your own, you should take some time to research and learn about the cultivation process. Growing Cannabis has become a popular hobby over the last decade as laws have grown more accepting of cannabis. Unfortunately, there is now a lot of misinformation online about cannabis cultivation, but we have some tried-and-true tips on cannabis seeds for sale online.

Growing Cannabis: Seeds vs. Clones

There are two ways to start growing your own cannabis plants: from seeds or from clones. The seed method should be familiar to us all – it’s the typical route we take whenever we work in our gardens. Growing from seeds allows us to experience the plant’s full life cycle, from germination to the final harvest.

You can also grow cannabis plants from clones. It may sound like something out of science fiction, but the basic idea is fairly simple. Clones are small cuttings taken from a larger “mother” plant that grow their own small roots systems. Growing from clones allows growers to bypass the processes of germinating and sprouting seeds, but this method has some significant drawbacks.

Why Grow Cannabis From Seeds?

Clones carry superficial appeal because they are very convenient in the short term. However, they present several disadvantages in the long term compared to growing Cannabis from seeds. Let’s take a deeper dive into the benefits of seeds over clones.

Seeds Produce Better Producing

Cannabis plants grown from seeds produce a higher producing because they have a taproot, which clones do not. The taproot is a particularly large and sturdy root that grows straight down from the plant base, penetrating deep into the soil. The taproot is the lifeline for the plant, absorbing vast amounts of nutrients from the soil. It also serves as a foundation from which smaller secondary roots sprout.

Clones do not have a taproot. Instead, they have an outcropping of thin, secondary roots, known as a fibrous root system. This makes the plant weaker overall. A taproot penetrates much deeper into the soil than a fibrous root system, accessing more vital nutrients. The long, thick taproot is also much stronger than a fibrous system, meaning it can support larger growth and a higher amounts. OG Seeds offers plentiful high producing cannabis seeds.

Seeds Are Durable and Easy To Store

One of the clearest advantages to seeds is that they are very small and highly durable, meaning you can easily store them for a long time. Of course, their minuscule size means you can keep them just about anywhere, though it’s best to store them in an airtight container in a cool place.

Clones are very fragile. You need to plant them and start caring for them ASAP, or they will die. Seeds are much more durable, so you don’t have to rush the process. You can store your seeds for as long as 3-5 years if you need to, though we doubt you’ll want to wait that long.

Clones Degrade During Transport

Building on the last point, clones degrade much faster than seeds do. As soon as you cut a clone from its mother plant, the clock starts ticking. You need to plant it and start providing water and fertilizer ASAP, or else it will die. Unfortunately, many clones can’t even make it through the mail before they wither.

Clones Can Carry Pests

Like all plants, clones originally made from cheap Cannabis seeds susceptible to bothersome pests. Thankfully, you can generally avoid these by growing your cannabis plants indoors or using natural pesticides. Unfortunately, there’s no way to ensure that the people who grew your cannabis clone took the proper precautions.

If the mother plant suffers an infestation of pests, such as aphids, black flies, or spider mites, it is very likely to pass those same pests on to its clones. The last thing you want is to lose your money on an irredeemable, pest-ridden plant. Thankfully, you don’t have to worry about that when you purchase seeds and control your growth from the very beginning!

Genetic Variety Is Good

Genetic variety is a strength. Clones are 100% genetically identical to their mother plant, which is a double-edged sword. If the mother plant has particularly desirable traits, its clones will share them, but if the mother has any genetic defects or deficiencies, the clones will suffer the same fate. OG seeds offers a big variety of high CBD seeds, high THC seeds in the nation.

Plants have immune systems, just like animals, and if the mother plant has a weak immune response, all of its clones will be highly susceptible to pests and diseases. When you grow multiple plants from Cannabis seeds for sale, each one will have a unique genetic makeup. Therefore, even if one of your plants turns out to have a genetic disadvantage, the other crops are still likely to thrive.

Online Seed Banks Offer More Options

Buying clones will give you far fewer options than shopping at an online Cannabis seed bank. Because clones degrade quickly, you cannot transport them very far. This means you can only buy them from nearby vendors, and depending on where you live, that could leave you with very few options. Seeds can safely travel across the country, so you can shop at national e-commerce sites like OG Seeds, where you can find a wide variety of high-quality Cannabis seeds.

Price of Cannabis Seeds

The price of cannabis seeds can vary quite a bit depending on a few factors. Based on its traits, a single seed could cost as little as $1 or as much as $30. Let’s take a quick look at the determining features that drive the prices at hemp and Cannabis seed banks.

  • Genetics: It should come as no surprise that cannabis seeds with high-quality genetics tend to cost more. Having high-quality genetics means that the seeds come from healthy, potent parent plants. You should do your research and shop at a reputable seed bank like OG Seeds to ensure the seeds you buy have a strong genetic background.
  • Potency: Strains with a higher cannabinoid content typically go for higher prices. Again, this should be no surprise because we all know you get what you pay for. The seeds might cost more, but investing in a more potent strain should actually save you money in the long term because you won’t need to use as much to achieve the desired effects.
  • Sex: Cannabis plants can be either male or female, but only female plants will produce the potent buds we love. You can buy feminized seeds, though this can raise the price a little. However, it’s worth it to ensure that your plants produce flowers. We’ll talk about feminized seeds in more detail later in this guide.
  • Where You Buy From: Last but perhaps most obvious, the vendor you choose has a huge impact on the price you will pay for your cannabis seeds. If you choose to purchase cannabis seeds for sale from a local vendor, the price will be heavily impacted by the competition in your area. This isn’t too much of a problem if you live in a large, competitive market like New York City or Los Angeles, but there will be much less competition if you live in smaller urban or rural areas, and the vendor could charge unreasonably high prices. Nationwide retailers like OG Seeds offer the most competitive pricing (and it doesn’t get any more convenient than shopping online). Check out our variety of Cheap Pot Seeds here!

How Do I Decide Which Cannabis Seeds To Buy?

Now that we’ve made the wise decision to grow from seeds, let’s get to your next big choice. What kind of Cannabis seeds are you going to buy? There are a lot of factors that go into making this decision. It starts with picking the best strains for your specific growing needs.

Which Cannabis Strains Do You Want To Grow?

Cannabis comes in a variety of different strains, also known as cultivars. Nobody knows exactly how many cannabis strains currently exist because breeders worldwide continue to introduce new cultivars every year. Most estimates say we have somewhere around 2,000-5,000 strains at the moment.

Each strain is a distinct individual. The cultivar you select will greatly impact the effects, flavor, aroma, and overall growing experience. It can be hard to pick a single strain with so many options to choose from. You might want to grow a few different varieties to get a good range of results. While there are thousands of strains out there, you can narrow your search by focusing on the three basic varieties: Indica, Sativa, and hybrid.

Do You Want an Indica, Sativa, or Hybrid Cannabis Seeds?

Any cannabis strain you choose will fall into one of these categories: Indica, Sativa, or hybrid. This classification will have a significant impact on the ultimate effects of the flower, as well as the growing process itself. Cannabis enthusiasts probably know these terms already, but we will go over them quickly here to refresh you.

  • Indica cannabis plants are native to the Hindu Kush Mountains of Central Asia (yep, that’s where we get the term “kush”). These plants are short and stocky with broad leaves. They tend to grow faster than Sativa variants and generally sprout more buds per plant. Indica strains are known for their deeply relaxing effects, making them popular choices for nighttime consumption.
  • Sativa plants are tall and thin, with long, slender leaves. They originated in the hot equatorial climates of South Asia, Africa, and Central America. In contrast to Indica strains, Sativas offer a more energizing effect. This makes them a perfect choice for daytime smoke seshes.
  • Hybrid strain seeds come from crossbreeding Indica and Sativa crops, giving them a combination of both genetic traits. Most hybrid strains are either Indica or Sativa-dominant, but there are also a few “true hybrids” available with 50/50 genetics.

Potency Levels

The experience you get from consuming any given cannabis strain depends on the high levels of THC it contains. Cannabinoids are the primary active compounds in cannabis plants that lead to their unique effects. There are over 100 cannabinoids (that we know of), but the two most common and popular ones are THC and CBD.

THC stands for tetrahydrocannabinol. It is well-known for the blissful, euphoric “high” it imparts. Cannabidiol (CBD) is quite different. It will not get you high, but it offers many potential wellness benefits, including relieving pain and anxiety, promoting better sleep, and supporting overall homeostasis (the optimal state of internal balance).

Should you buy a high-THC strain or a high-CBD strain? That’s a matter of personal preference. If wellness is your priority, or you need relief from physical or mental issues, you should probably choose a strain with a higher CBD potency. On the other hand, if you are more geared towards a recreational experience, you might prefer something with more THC. Ideally, you should try growing multiple varieties of seeds and sampling them all to experience the full range of cannabinoid effects.

Cannabis vs. Hemp

You might be surprised to learn this, but there are actually two kinds of cannabis plants: hemp and Cannabis. Hemp plants contain very high levels of CBD and low levels of THC. Cannabis is the opposite, with a high THC potency and low CBD content. We sell both hemp and Cannabis seeds here at OG Seeds so that you can satisfy all your cannabinoid needs.

For the most part, hemp and Cannabis come in the same strains. For example, Sour Diesel is one of the most popular Sativa strains worldwide, and it comes in both a Cannabis version and a hemp version. However, certain strains have been bred for particularly high CBD or THC content. For example, Lifter is a popular hemp strain with high CBD levels and almost zero THC.

Should You Buy Cannabis Seeds or Hemp Seeds?

Whether you choose hemp seeds or Cannabis seeds for sale comes down to your personal preferences. Ask yourself what effects you want to get from your cannabis crop. Are you looking for a higher level of THC? In that case, you should try buying Cannabis seeds. On the other hand, if you want to grow a plant that is rich in CBD, you should opt for hemp seeds. Better yet, grow both kinds of plants and enjoy an even wider range of benefits!

Growing Cannabis Seeds: Indoors or Outdoors?

Now it’s time to decide where to set up your grow operation. Will you cultivate your crops inside or outside? Both approaches have pros and cons, so let’s take a deeper dive.

Growing Outdoors

The biggest advantage of growing outdoor cannabis seeds is that it leaves a smaller carbon footprint. The plant will get natural light from the sun, nutrients from the soil, and carbon dioxide from the atmosphere. All of these come courtesy of nature, at no cost to you.

However, outdoor grows are much less predictable because we can’t control the weather. If your local climate isn’t right for the particular strain of cannabis you want to grow, or the soil doesn’t have a rich nutrient content, your crop might produce a weak amounts or none at all.

Outdoor grows are also more susceptible to pests. Keep a close eye on your crops, and consider using a natural, organic pesticide like neem oil to keep potential predators away from your plants. We strongly advise you to avoid synthetic pesticides, as these can have a harmful impact on the environment and the consumer (you).

Growing Indoors

Growing cannabis inside gives you much more control over the environment, though it comes with a few extra expenses. You will need to invest in grow lights and fertilizer. You may even need to buy CO2 canisters if there is not enough carbon dioxide naturally present in the air. However, these additional purchases are well worth it in the long term because they can improve your ultimate amounts.

The main downside to growing Cannabis seeds for indoor growing is more limited space. Outside, cannabis crops can grow very large, with some Sativa strains reaching up to 20 feet tall! Unless you have a massive warehouse at your disposal, it will be difficult, if not impossible, to get very large growths in an indoor setting.

Most home-growers recommend choosing the indoor method because it improves your chances of having a potent, bountiful amounts. Indoor cultivation is also more widely accessible since many people in urban areas do not have an outdoor gardening space at their disposal. Some people prefer to grow Indica strains indoors and Sativas outdoors due to their respective sizes, but since most modern strains are hybrids anyway, the cap on size should not limit you too much.

Feminized or Un-sexed Seeds?

As we previously touched on, cannabis plants can be either male or female. Unfortunately, male cannabis plants do not grow flowers. Instead, they grow sacs of pollen that are essential to helping the plant reproduce. However, a male plant won’t produce the kind of crop that you’re looking for, which is why many growers choose to buy feminized seeds.

Feminized seeds contain two X chromosomes and no Y chromosome, which guarantees that they grow into female cannabis plants. This, in turn, ensures that the plants will grow flowers rich in THC or CBD (depending on whether you buy hemp or Cannabis). Buying feminized seeds generally makes the process simpler, especially for novice growers, but growing a blend of male and female plants can allow you to pollinate the plants and produce your own Cannabis seeds for sale in the future.

If you want to grow both male and female cannabis plants, you can do so with un-sexed seeds. However, you will need to keep each plant separate from the others. Otherwise, the male plants might pollinate the females when you don’t want them to. Once a female plant receives pollen from a male, it stops producing flowers and starts producing seeds instead. Growers typically prefer to reserve one female plant to pollinate with a male while keeping the rest of the female plants separate, so they grow large amounts of flower.

Regular or Autoflower Cannabis Seeds?

Once you settle on buying either un-sexed or feminized seeds, you have another choice to make. Will you grow regular or autoflowering seeds? Before you can make your pick, let’s explain the difference between these two options.

Cannabis plants go through multiple life stages. The vegetative stage is the period during which the plant grows from a seedling and sprouts leaves. After the vegetative stage is complete, the flowering stage kicks in. When you start growing with regular cannabis seeds, the flowering stage will take around 8-11 weeks.

If you use regular Cannabis seeds and grow your plants indoors, you need to do a bit of leg work to kickstart the flowering stage. In nature, cannabis plants automatically go into the flowering stage during autumn, when the days grow shorter. If you grow your Cannabis indoors, you will need to simulate this by changing the light cycle.

If you start with autoflower seeds, you don’t need to worry about lighting. Autoflowering seeds, as their name suggests, grow plants that automatically flower around 3-4 weeks after the vegetative stage completes. They do this without requiring any changes in their environment.

You’re probably wondering, how do we make autoflower seeds? To explain the process, we need to introduce another cannabis variety. We already talked about Indica and Sativa; now it’s time for you to meet Cannabis Ruderalis. Ruderalis is a variety of cannabis with low cannabinoid levels, making it unpopular with growers. However, Ruderalis has one amazing trait – it automatically produces flowers about a month after vegetation.

Cannabis farmers make autoflowering seeds by cross-pollinating Ruderalis plants with their favorite Indica, Sativa, or Hybrid cultivars. The resulting plant has the fast autoflowering cycle of Ruderalis, but preserves the rich cannabinoid content of the other parent strain. Amazingly, crossbreeding with Ruderalis plants does not appear to reduce the THC or CBD content of its offspring.

Is It Easy To Germinate Cannabis Seeds?

Yes, germinating Cannabis seeds is a very simple process! If you aren’t familiar with the term already, germinating refers to the first stage of growth, when the seedling sprouts. The seedling is the first baby version of the cannabis plant.

We’re about to walk you through the germination process, but we have one piece of advice before we do. We strongly recommend germinating your Cannabis seeds indoors. You want to protect the fragile seedlings from potentially poor weather, and at this stage, light, soil, and space are not important, so there is no real advantage to germinating outside.

How To Germinate Cannabis Seeds

To germinate your cannabis seeds, you only need these four items:

  • Cannabis seeds
  • Paper towels
  • A spray bottle filled with warm, filtered water
  • A plastic container with a lid or two kitchen plates

Once you have assembled your supplies, you are ready to start the germination process. All you have to do is follow these simple steps:

  1. Spray water on a paper towel to dampen it. Place the towel in the bottom of the plastic container or on one of the kitchen plates.
  2. Place your cannabis seeds on the damp paper towel.
  3. Spray water on another paper towel and place it on top of your seeds. Then, cover it with the plastic lid or the second plate. You should now have a sandwich situation with the following layers: plastic container base (or plate) – damp towel – seeds – damp towel – plastic lid (or plate).
  4. Place the container in a warm, dark place so germination can commence. Check on it every few hours and make sure to keep the seeds moist (but not wet). If the towels dry out, the seeds won’t be able to germinate.

Depending on the conditions, the germination process could take anywhere from 12 hours to a couple of days. Cannabis seeds should germinate in temperatures of 70°-90°F (21°-32°C), with the optimal temperature being approximately 77°F (25°C). The optimal humidity is 70-90%, so make sure that the towel stays nice and moist (but not soaking wet – it should be leaking water).

Skill Level

Some hemp and Cannabis strains are more challenging to grow, so you should honestly assess your skill level before you start shopping at cannabis seed banks. If this is your first growing experience, you probably want to pick a simpler strain. Here are some grower-friendly strains that are great options for novices:

If you are a more seasoned grower, it might be time for a bigger challenge. There are many popular strains that home breeders avoid because they require very particular environmental conditions. Still, with the right combination of experience and ambition, you can produce these cultivars at home. Here are some strains for the experienced grower:

  • Headband (hybrid)
  • Trainwreck (Sativa
  • AC/DC (CBD-dominant hybrid)
  • Dr. Grinspoon (Sativa)
  • Columbian Gold (Sativa)

Be Sure To Plan Ahead Before Growing Cannabis Seeds

We cannot overemphasize the importance of carefully planning your grow operation. While you’re waiting for your seeds to arrive in the mail, make sure that all the other necessities are taken care of. Decide where you will grow your cannabis crop and prepare the space.

If growing indoors, purchase high-quality grow lights, fan(s) for ventilation, and a plug-in timer to control the light cycle. Purchase soil, fertilizer, and a few pots for your plants (you will need to re-pot the crop in progressively larger vessels as it grows). We highly encourage you to invest in a high-quality thermometer and hygrometer (a device for measuring humidity) to help you maintain optimal atmospheric conditions.

But let’s take a couple of steps back. Where do you get your cannabis seeds to begin with? It’s easier than you might imagine.

Am I Getting Quality Genetics From My Cannabis Seeds?

Of course, you want to make sure you get high-quality Cannabis seeds. At OG Seeds, we guarantee that all of our seeds come from premium genetic lines, bred for the richest cannabinoid content. How can you verify the quality for yourself? Here are some things to look for:

  • Color: The best Cannabis seeds have a brown hue, which can range from very light to almost black. The seeds of certain cultivars have light stripes or a tortoiseshell pattern, while others are more uniform in color. If the seeds have any green coloration, it means the grower harvested them too early.
  • Shape: High-quality seeds have a teardrop shape – tapered at one end and round on the other. Seeds that are flat or irregularly shaped may have trouble germinating.
  • Sheen: Look for seeds with a slightly shimmery surface, almost as if they were polished with wax. If the seed has a dull, matte surface, it is not a healthy specimen.
  • Firmness: So far, we’ve only talked about using sight to identify high-quality seeds, but you can also use the sense of touch. Gently press the cannabis seed between your thumb and forefinger. It should be firm. If the shell is soft, the seed was harvested too early, and if it is brittle, the seed is too old.
